How to Use the 5 Whys for Clarity
The 5 Whys is a simple way to get from symptoms to root causes. Ask “why?” about your first answer, then again about that answer—about five times. Stop when your answer feels true enough to act on.
Steps
- State the issue in one line.
- Ask “Why is that happening?” and answer honestly.
- Repeat the question to your own answer 3–5 times.
- Capture the insight and choose one small, reversible next step.
Tip: When you feel stuck, switch to “What about that matters to me?” to widen the path.
Example
Problem: I keep procrastinating on my portfolio.
- Why? I feel overwhelmed by its size.
- Why? I want it to be perfect.
- Why? I’m worried it reflects my worth.
- Why? I’m tying outcomes to identity.
- Why? I’m afraid of being judged.
Insight: This isn’t about productivity—it’s about safety. Start with a small, messy first draft just for me.
